Promundo is a global leader in promoting gender justice and preventing violence by engaging men and boys in partnership with women and girls.

They believe that working with men and boys to transform harmful gender norms and unequal power dynamics is a critical part of the solution to achieve gender equality. For the empowerment of women and girls to continue advancing, men and boys must see themselves as allies in the process. Men and boys also benefit when harmful norms are challenged. Promundo’s research, programs, and advocacy efforts show that promoting healthy notions of what it means to be a man and what is means to be a woman leads to improvements in men’s own lives, and in the lives of women and girls. |

Campaign to foment the discussion around the legalization of abortion in Brazil

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year 22 million abortions are performed in unsafe conditions around the world, leading to the deaths of 47 thousand women and causing physical and mental harm to other 5 million women. 98% of all illegal and unsafe abortions happen in the Global South.

Promundo understands that legalizing the abortion will be a long road. But they believe that each new person who is convinced of the importance of the legalization mean yet another step in the right direction. The recent Zika virus outbreak in Brazoç, associated with the increased number of babies born with microcephaly and the consequent increase of abandoned pregnant women and new mothers by their partners, adds urgency to an informed discussion about the legalization of abortion.

Haywood Watkins III, a WPP Fellow, went to Rio de Janeiro to create a campaign for Promundo, with the goal to foment the discussion around abortion. Click here to read his case study.
