Girl Effect are a creative social business. They exist to create a new normal with and for girls.
When a girl has self-belief and is supported by her family and community; when she’s empowered with skills, ideas and knowledge; when she has access to services, role models and other girls – she can demand to stay in school, to get healthcare and to get married and have children when she chooses.
Girl Effect work with girls and those around them to create active champions of a world in which every girl fulfills her potential and the cycle of poverty is broken.
Elisa Birtwistle went to Rwanda in September 2016 to work with Girl Effect. She created a sustainability plan for the organization, helping them empower girls across the country to reach their full potential and break the cycle of poverty.
Girl Effect has created the pioneering media brand ‘Ni Nyampinga’, a magazine, radio and mobile brand in Rwanda. The content features characters and real-life role models who convey powerful messages on health, welfare, domestic violence and education. It was the first of its kind and currently reaches 48% of Rwandan girls.
As the brand grows, Girl Effect was looking at how to build towards making ‘Ni Nyampimga‘ sustainable so its impact and resonance can continue long into the future. Elisa’s placement helped them make a plan for Ni Nyampinga’s journey towards sustainability, considering the variety of existing thinking and internal expertise, leaving them with doable initiatives towards this goal.
