EE is a pioneer venture that gets middle-class families in high-rise buildings to recycle the materials that they would otherwise throw away with the conventional rubbish. The primary objectives of EE are to improve the city’s environment and the lives of the hundreds of street garbage pickers who rummage through the garbage throughout the city of Recife. The major hurdle until now has been that very few people know about the initiative. This is where Ed came in. Ed’s objective was to increase the number of apartment buildings partnering with EE - specifically 100 buildings within a year - by prompting people to sign up to the scheme via an effective communications campaign. Ed did a tremendous amount of research before hand, raised a staggering £4500 for his marketing budget, and when he arrived, hit the ground running. What he accomplished at the end of the month was quite remarkable – a top notch communications plan that will make a world of difference to EE, the environment in Recife and the lives of thousands of catadores. But it doesn’t stop there. On top of making a huge difference to the organisation, Ed also gained a tremendous amount. He now knows he’s able to work on his own without the fall-back of team members or superiors (and thrive) and he developed his strategic abilities (ran a research programme, developed communications strategies, and wrote creative briefs – things he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do back home). However, the most important thing that Ed took away from his month in Brazil was his boost in confidence & self-belief. Absolutley invaluable. In a month, Matt was expected to create a film that would introduce the quilombo community, the way of living of quilombola people and their fights for rights. As well, he was expected to talk about the work and the impact of IS Brazil in the community, through IS’ placement of a Mozambican agronomist and development worker. A lot to get your head around in a month, and a lot to cover in a short film. However, Matt accepted the challenge with grace and arrived in Brazil with an open mind, lots of energy, and a desire to reach all of the objectives agreed upon. It was never easy, and certainly not a smooth ride, but Matt persevered and his time in Brazil was an incredible success. If these children, who had learnt so much from the programme, were looked on favourably by the community they would be able to effect change much more successfully. This appeared on the face of it to be a very straightforward project. Penny thought they would be able to raise awareness of the scheme quite easily and believed it would be as simple as promoting it in the local schools within Cabo. This wasn’t the case. Penny found the placement challenging, but extremely rewarding at the same time. Penny made a tremendous difference to the organisation Plan and to the children involved with the many projects that Plan offers. Ryan came to Recife to work with GTP+ to help to decrease discrimination amongst the population as a whole about products and food stuffs prepared by workers who are living with HIV and AIDS. The primary objective of Ryan’s placement was to create a campaign to promote the Solidarity Kitchen with a view to strengthen the activities and sustainability of GTP+. Before Ryan arrived in Brazil he sat down and wrote a list of objectives that he was hoping he would benefit from spending a month in a completely new environment. The list included obvious things like leadership and communications skills, strategic development, cultural insight and, of course, doing some good. He’s already discovered that what he has gained far exceeds these. Not only has his experience impacted hugely on the way he perceives communications in general, but the way he views the world. Tiffany worked with Iracambi for a month to help give them renewed focus, open the channels of internal communication and deliver them an easy implementable brand and comms strategy. After many sessions with the founders, interviews with past and present Iracambites, and lots of reading and research, Tiffany was able to articulate their story, define and develop their brand, and create a comms strategy and comms action plan. They are based in Minas Gerais (a Brazilian State that’s the same size as Texas) and work to conserve the Atlantic Rainforest – an older and more bio-diverse rainforest than its Amazonian sister. Penny spent a month in the Northeast of Brazil working with the organization Plan and the host agency Arcos. The original brief for the placement was to promote the ‘Communicating Children’s Rights’ project, a project run by the children from the local community Cabo. A secondary outcome was to give the children who had taken part in the programme a higher social standing within the municipality of Cabo.
